On this episode, we roll back the clock 60 years to 1958. Tune in and find out what Newfoundlanders & Labradorians might find in record store bins six decades ago. Includes spins by Alan Mills, Omar Blondahl, Peter Aceves (Peter Narvaez), Wilf Doyle, and others.
After 1958, we fast forward 10 years to 1968... the year they say that Bell Islander Harry Hibbs outsold all other Canadian recording artists! In addition to Harry, you’ll hear spins by Dick Nolan, Burt Cuff, The Du-cats, Gordon Pinsent, and John White.

1978 Part Two, Ep. 475

For this episode, we continue to look back four decades to 1978, the year of The Big Boom on Bell Island and the year that UFOs invaded Clarenville!  Musically, it was also the year that birthed Newfoundland Trad/Rock. Tune in and you’ll hear THE WONDERFUL GRAND BAND and RED ISLAND will dish out the Rock & Reel delights!

1978 was also the year that legendary St. John’s folklorist/bluesman PETER NARVAEZ recorded  a cassette tape in his basement... nobody was creating digital music back then. You’ll hear a track from that ultra rare cassette. And you'll hear tracks by CHILLIWACK (What's their Newfoundland connection?), FABIAN JAMES, DAVID MICHAEL, THE SALVATION ARMY TEMPLE SONGSTERS, plus Newfoundland's First Lady of the Accordion MINNIE WHITE. And there's more Newfoundland oldies too!

1988 Part One, Ep. 476

Previous episodes of NFR shone a light on recordings of Newfoundland music from 1958, ‘68, and ‘78. With this episode we begin the conclusion of that series by featuring Newfoundland & Labrador recordings from 1988.
In 1988, cassette tapes were beginning to replace vinyl, and local CDs began to appear for the first time.  The City of St. John’s celebrated 100 years of municipal government in 1988. Mayor John Murphy began (and ended) his recording career with an appearance on a tape which marked the City’s centennial celebrations. Tune in and you’ll hear the Mayor and jazz legend Ralph Walker on a couple of tracks from that rare tape.
